The LUMS School of Science & Engineering offers to both undergraduates and postgraduates, for the first time in Pakistan, a world-class education in science and engineering closely coupled to research. We believe that technological innovation is the only way forward in the world of tomorrow, when the economy and industry are based on deep scientific knowledge. LUMS graduates will be more than mere practitioners; they will be thought leaders and technology entrepreneurs equipped to remain globally competitive over the next decades. This is why the LUMS SSE curriculum emphasizes a strong background in basic sciences and mathematics, and offers specialization in only six core subjects - Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Physics - that we believe will underpin most important developments in the future. We expect that upon graduation, our superbly trained students will be torn between offers for PhD studies at the world's top research universities, and the attraction of working with SSE's own faculty, whose research will be every bit as exciting and important.
In 2008, LUMS SSE will open its doors to its first class of undergraduates. For the first year and a half, all undergraduates will follow a common, rigorous curriculum in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology; similar to how they would be trained at the world's great universities in preparation for cutting-edge interdisciplinary research in science and technology. Theory we teach in the lecture hall will be reinforced by meaningful, sometimes eye-opening experiments in our state-of-the-art laboratories.
We are now in search of the 200 most motivated, best prepared young minds that yearn for a broad and deep scientific understanding of the world around them. We expect that admission into SSE will be highly competitive, so please invest the time necessary to understand and complete this application form. We want it to reveal your strengths, interests, and creativity. Great scientists or engineers are men and women of high integrity; so do not compromise your application with ghostwritten submissions and falsified teacher reports. Prepare well for our admissions test by studying its curriculum and attempting the sample questions that are posted online; it is designed to pick out those who understand the basic sciences and mathematics deeply.
Do you dream of designing microelectronic systems on a chip for the next generation of communications or computing? Or would you like to develop a new drug to combat a disease that plagues mankind? What about originating the next high speed method to overcome congestion on the Internet? Or growing tissue to replace damaged organs in the human body? Would you like to be part of the search for the single theory that unifies all the forces in the universe? Do you want to design smart power electronics to deliver energy? Or use advanced mathematics to model new water and energy architectures to manage scarce resources? Working with LUMS SSE's world-class faculty, you can be at the frontier of finding answers to these and other pressing questions.
Do you come from an underprivileged part of society? Haven’t done independent projects in the past? Is English not spoken in your home? Doesn't matter! If you pass our test and interview and we determine that you cannot afford to pay for your education, we will pay for it - that is a promise!
As the most exciting science and engineering university so far in Pakistan, where research and discovery permeate even undergraduate education, we want to build a diverse community of the best and the brightest from among our youth. If this describes you, then we want you!
